New York Stock Exchange Composite Index A composite index made up of all the stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange and weighted according to the market value (stock price multiplied by shares outstanding) of each security.
The base was set at 50 when the index was established in 1966. The exchange also calculates and publishes specialized indexes.
